Quiraing, Isle of Skye.
Another contract on Skye to the popular Quiraing area further north on the Trotternish ridge from the Old Man of Storr.
This is another one of Skyes most popular tourist areas and this to is suffering from huge numbers.
This project had 3 distinct separate areas of work.
1. Lower area adjacent to the road, (resurface, new ditches, viewing area and revetment).
2. Bench cut path leading on southern approach to Meall na Suiramach, (x-drains, revetment, pitching, aggregate path).
3. Steep final approach to the North of Meall na Suiramach. (pitched path, aggregate path, drainage features).
Stone was once again collected from Duntulm, this time however it was all bagged on the scree slopes and then flown direct to site.
Aggregate was imported into the car park area and either flown up in skips or tracked in for the lower path works.
The lower path was fairly straight forward and we were once again helped with the machine work and transport by A.Macleod plant and haulage.
The pitched path on the northern slope was to repair a large scar that had developed on a steep grassy slope
The work on the southern approach was the most technically difficult. The area was extremely wet with water pouring across the path, the ground was very peaty in sections with very poor drainage that was almost impossible in the worst of conditions and so was being badly eroded.
The solution was numerous x-drains and ditching with new aggregate paths leading in and out of the feature, path definition and re-alignment.
